Student Profile: Shay Tobin
Shay Tobin is a second year undergraduate student studying a Bachelor of Advanced Science, majoring in Astrophysics and Astronomy at Macquarie University and is a member of the Boorooberongal clan of the Darug Nation of the Greater Sydney Region. Shay has had a life-long passion for the natural world and while at Macquarie he has focused on theoretical and mathematical physics. He plans to pursue a life as an academic researcher. In addition to his academic interests Shay also lives as an artist, his artistic work is inspired by the same deep fascination with the natural world that drives his scientific interests.
The Geometric and Probabilistic Structure of Classical Physical Theories
We will investigate how the Hamiltonian structure of classical systems, in particular the classical point particle in three dimensions follows from the requirement that all the structure is encoded in the two observables of position and momentum and the constraints imposed by the classical space time symmetry groups, the Galilei group and the Poincare group respectively.
